If you choose to sponsor a Waterbird your funds will be used towards the rescue, rehabilitation, care and release of waterbirds all year round.
Pune and its surrounding areas are home to various species of water birds due to its abundance of water bodies. A wide variety of Storks, Herons, Waterhens, Ducks, Cormorants and even Flamingos seek permanent or temporary refugee around these waterbodies. Many roost in colonies of over hundreds of birds that nest in large canopy trees.
However with the recent climatic changes as well as various unregulated tree felling incidents, we have been getting a large number of water birds admitted to the RESQ Wildlife TTC with scores of nests being displaced during the rains. Some come in due to wing injuries sustained in Manja, some due to collisions, while others due dehydration. These require enclosures enriched to suit their habitat, specific feed to meet their dietery requirements, and medical care involving treatments, at times requiring surgeries and post operative care.
Some of these birds that are admitted as juveniles, at times spend 2-3 months until they are completely self-sustaining and start foraging for their food.
On average, it costs us Rs. 1,000 per month for the rescue and rehabilitation these birds including their special nutrition feeds, veterinary care and rehabilitation supplies and care items until release.
