One of the most challenging cases we receive on a heartbreakingly frequent basis are paralysis and spinal injury cases. Not only do these injuries affect an animal's ability to walk, but they also prevent them from indulging in perfectly normal urges, such as the desire to run or play.Rubber floor mats are incredibly helpful to our Limited Mobility dogs, who come to us either paralysed or with amputated/severely damaged legs. While it is difficult (and in some cases, impossible) for these dogs to walk on all fours, they are incredibly resourceful and quick to finding new ways to walk, and even run! Muddy surfaces are not conducive to these dogs, as mud can penetrate wound dressings and worsen these healing wounds. Similarly, surfaces like sand or gravel are either too difficult to walk on, or too rough a surface when these dogs inevitably slip, fall, and get back up again. Rubber mats (like the ones in the pictures above) provide just the right amount of friction for limited mobility dogs to grip properly, enabling them to hoist and drag themselves to wherever they need to be. Not only this, but they also make for great cushioning, and if a dog slips or loses balance, they won't end up with more injuries than when they first began their journey at RESQ. We currently have at least 30 dogs recuperating at our Limited Mobility Unit, and urgently need 5 rolls of rubber mats. If you'd like to contribute towards this, please click the DONATE button below!
