Acid thrown on four cows; two critical!
It was a seemingly normal start to the day as cattle were let loose to graze in the forest area on the outskirts of Lonavala. But the day was about to take a very severe turn for them. Acid was splashed on four of the cattle, hitting one squarely in the face and one on the side, resulting in third degree burns. Two of the cows sustained superficial wounds on their backs. The former two were rescued and transported to the RESQ Centre. We have named them Lakshmi and Pari.
The right side of Lakshmi’s face has been practically melted away from the corrosive nature of the acid. She has lost vision in her eye. Skin and muscle has denatured to a white film over her bones. As horrific as this description sounds, Pari is far worse off. The skin, underlying fat and muscle of her side was burned away and her rumen or stomach was on the outside of her body when she was rescued. A local veterinarian replaced her rumen inside her abdominal cavity and attempted to patch her up but stitches would not hold on the rapidly deteriorating skin.
It goes without saying that Lakshmi and Pari are in incredible, indescribable pain. They have been started on fluid therapy as burns lead to severe dehydration, alongside a robust antibiotic cover and heavy pain relief. They are being carefully monitored, given their critical state. Why were they targeted? We’re not sure; we think it may be a malicious attempt to take away their owner’s livelihood. What matters now is only their recovery. Please help these two cows. PS. The case is being pursued legally by a local animal activist, currently all our efforts are engaged in ensuring these 2 make it.
