A cat was stuck on a high coconut tree near Sinhgad Road, Pune, and was not coming down. WhatsApp messages to help him get down were being spread like wildfire on phones and the RESQ team called the number which was provided on the message to send trained rescuers (who are also expert climbers!). We were told not to come because the Fire Brigade had come and some volunteers were handling the situation. We moved on to other rescue work since there was already help there.Shortly after, we received a call that the cat has fallen down and needs medical help. We sent the RESQ ambulance immediately and were shocked to know what happened. We rushed him to the RESQ Centre and started his treatment immediately. The cat has broken his leg completely because he was MADE TO FALL FROM THE TREE STRAIGHT TO THE GROUND!! Even if that was the strategy, the least that should have been done was to lay out a safety net below to break his fall!! I just spoke to some individuals on the ground there and I was livid to hear that a cat had basically been shaken off a height of 30-40 ft without any safety net. There are so many incidents we hear of rescues going wrong... and while it is commendable that individuals want to help an animal in distress, misguided compassion and overconfidence can seriously hurt an animal even more. This situation could have easily been properly managed and resulted in a peaceful rescue of the cat, but haste truly makes waste. The cat is now at RESQ, we have named him Benzy. He’s going to require a major orthopaedic surgery and his recovery is going to be extremely challenging. PLEASE support Benzy by contributing today! Your help could make a world of a difference.
