Symbi and Cycle – Rescuing Kittens

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

Cycle

Named this kitten Cycle, not because  he got injured when his neck got caught in cycle spokes but because 10 drops of medicine and he started cycling with all his limbs. All he did was  cycle. He never stood up. All he did was look up at me when we fed him food and medicines and cycle. Cycle stayed with us for 3 days. One afternoon, just after I fed him and just after he did his cycling act for me I left the RESQ office. Just when I thought he is getting better, I got a call from the office that he passed away an hour after I left. When they go on their own..for some strange reason they always try to make you happy before they go. Its  a pattern.

Symbi

My yoga instructor Daphee called us about Symbi, a kitten who was at Range Hills in the Symbiosis Health Club near the swimming pool. Fatima and me went to look at her and she sat there huddled up next to her mother. She walked slow but fine, no broken bones. I thought, maybe something happened and she is in shock. Gave her some Betnesol drops and asked them to call me the next day. There were a lot of people around who really cared about her – the kids and staff. The next day Pankaj, The swimming coach, got her over to the RESQ clinic where we determined that she had had some head injury and a mild edema near her brain was preventing her from keeping balancing which is why she was sitting still as if she was in shock. Her pupils were reacting to light and movement which was a sign that she would 99% recover. We altered our course of medication and Symbi, as Pankaj reports, is doing much better everyday!

Monitoring Blacky’s Progress – Skin Case!

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

A few weeks back I posted a picture of Blackie who we were treating. Here’s his treatment in progress. In a month from now, hopefully we should have a full coat black puppy!

22nd June - Treatment Session 2

His first treatment session, he had absolutely no hair! We forgot to carry our cameras that day!

29 July - Treatment Session 3

In one week – he has grown quite a lot of hair and is definitely on recovery mode! Can see less skin now and more hair on his head and body.

Just incase you’re wondering why we had to tie his mouth = its because we spray this ointment that he is not allowed to lick until it dries off!

His next treatment is due tomorrow, will update more pictures when we see him tomorrow!

What is Animal Cruelty?

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

By Neha Panchamiya, President, RESQ

RESQ was born over three years ago and since then there have been several instances where I have witnessed the recent and current generation regress to barbaric times whereas animals are concerned.

Animal cruelty can range from neglect to intentional torture/abuse or malicious killing of an animal. The roots of animal cruelty according to me stem from thoughtless, inherited habit and lack of awareness. From stoning, throwing and tying up little puppies to sexually and physically abusing dogs; from ‘animal lovers’ hoarding animals in inhumane conditions to puppy-struck individuals buying puppies from pet shops and unethical breeders; from pet owners who take pride in owning fancy breeds but tie them all day, confine them to small spaces with minimal human interaction to irresponsible pet owners who abandon their pets when they get old, sick or move out of town. Each one of these instances account for cruelty to animals.

When an individual witnesses a crime but does not help to stop it, he becomes a party to the crime by the law. In my opinion, similarly, individuals that watchcruelty to animals on a daily basis and do nothing about it are as much party to the cruelty as the one committing it.

I do not expect people to start going out of their way and taking care of every animal they see but to contribute in reducing the human-animal conflict that exists around us. It is possible to co-exist peacefully in a world that God created for humans and animals, it is only a matter of awareness, education and being able to listen to our conscience.

Animals feel and endure the same pain as us, the only difference is that we can voice our pain and they cannot.

Mahatma Gandhi says, ‘The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated’.

A profound thought. Think people.

Iris

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

We got a frantic call one afternoon from Aundh, near Spicer College. All the caller said is that there is a puppy ‘gasping’. Wounds and skin, other less serious cases we attend to when we make a schedule for Rescues for the Day.

When we hear the word ‘gasping’ we run.

Aparna, Namrata and me headed out to Aundh. What we saw left us dumbfounded. A black puppy about 3 months old, thin and frail, gasping hard, both his eyes cut out and kept next to him where he was lying. I cannot comprehend what had happened. There was not a single wound on the rest of his body, not a single broken bone, no swelling, no temperature. I could not understand why his eyes, evidently cut out, were kept neatly next to him. We wanted to really try but Iris did not make it.

He’s definitely in Heaven now, hopefully watching beautiful things that he would have never seen here.

Capri: We had to amputate her leg. She is is already walking and wound is healing very well!

Brando: His wound is healing very well. The rescue caller for him, Mr. Sudhir Wagi, calls us everyday to enquire about him!

Captain Hook: Had an amputation surgery as well…he’s recovering slowly!

Rani: Ready for release

Tin-Tin: almost recovered…has a slight limp. A couple of more days, and will be ready to go!

Sandy: Dodged surgery! Miraculously self healing. Sandy had a femur bone fracture and his other leg was dislocated from the hip! Will recover slowlllyyy and steadily!

Obi – Adopt a Dog!

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

Hi,

I’m a volunteer who has been working for ResQ for the past month. A friend had been taking care of this puppy for the past few months. ‘Obi’ had been in a bad accident where his front left paw had been run over by a speeding vehicle. He was in a very bad condition but over the past few months, he has recovered completely. The only reminder of that horrific accident is a slight disfiguring of his paw. He is now a perfectly normal and happy doggie who can walk on all fours. Obi is an extremely affectionate and lively one year old who just needs a loving home.  Please do let me know if anybody would be willing to give him a loving home.

Thanking you,
