Capri @ the RESQ Kennel

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Volunteer Sruti Menon rescued this pup from Viman Nagar from Mr. Sanjay (Viman Nagar).  A vehicle has probably gone over this little pup while she was sleeping.

She can walk on three legs..her left hind is injured but that should heal in a few days. Its the right paw that  we are worried about. We named her Capri and she is at the RESQ Kennels right now. Lets hope her right paw heals and surgery is not required.

Scary to Stud!

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Pic 1: 2nd April, 2010 – Volunteer Aparna called in for a dog with Skin Disease which she decided to look after. She named him ‘Scary’ (a name we hope doesn’t last forever:))

Pic 2: Scary being treated. His right ear was not doing very well and the vet said that he would need a partial ear amputation.

Pic 3: Scary fostered with Aparna

Pic 4, 5 and 6: Scary after a partial ear amputation surgery.

Pic 7: Scary on his way to recovery.

Pic 8: Almost recovered..

Pic 9: Fully recovered! Released on 15th May, 2010.

Our scary stud has been released where he was found. However, the people in that locality aren’t very nice and Aparna says she often finds people stoning him. I hope someone reading this post, will help us adopt him or find a place where he can roam freely without being troubled. If you know of such a place, please let us know.

Adopt him – he’s not really Scary!

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Scary is called scary – because at one point when he was COMPLETELY hairless he did look scary :) He also had a major ear injury..and part of his ear had to be amputated.

Now Scary is not Really Scary anymore….because good medical treatment and dedicated love and care from the RESQ volunteers & doctor have changed Scary’s life. He is fine and fit as a fiddle!

Aparna Shastri, one of our volunteers, has been looking out for him. She has sent us his pictures because the locality in which Scary is in is quite mean. Aparna has reportedly told us that people throw stones at him and are cruel to dogs in general. Aparna says he is extremely alert and sharp and will make a good watch dog.

So if you know a safe locality that would welcome him or someone’s farmhouse, or home where he can go to – please do get in touch with us.

Scary...not so scary!!

Progress on Whitey!

Monday, June 28th, 2010

So if you see our post ‘Skin Day’ a couple of days ago…there’s a white pup that Volunteer Prarthana is treating. One week and his skin is doing muchhhh better! His hair is coming back. He was slightly down and we started off some new medication for Whitey today as well. Here’s a picture of him and Volunteer Aparna – ‘looking’ slightly better but feeling slightly down.

Whitey struggling with Aparna as she sprays him down with medicines that he is not supposed to lick!

Skin Day!

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Prarthana, Dhanashree and me set out towards Kothrud side…All skin disease cases.

The first one was at Film Institute, Law College Road…We looked for the pup for a while, and just when we were about to give up our search and move to the next rescue, he showed up from nowhere and came trotting towards us!

He was itching less than the last time and his hair was coming back.

Prarthana and Whitey

Next we found Mohan in the Film Institute Canteen. Dr Karlette had told us that he has no hair on big patches on his back but when we looked at him…he had all his hair back! Fast recovery :) Didn’t need to do a thing!

Next we headed to Dhanukar Colony side where were treating a dog who has cancer. We reached there and were told that the dog has ‘gone out with the sheep and goat and will be back in the evening, so we should come back then’. Allright :)

Headed next to Mahatma Society, where this little black pup whose really bad is being treated by us since a week. His wounds have healed but he was still so itchy and scratchy :( and has hardly any hair. But we’re certain he’s going to recover and turn into Black Beauty in a couple of weeks :)

Neha and Prarthana - giving Blackie a massage with his skin soothing lotion!

The next one was a mommy dog with 4 very cute puppies in the same locality who had some fungal patches. She was kind to us and let us treat her. Dhanashree muzzled her first dog!! (Congrats Dhanashree :) )

At the end of the day, Prarthana’s college uniform was a sight to see..and it always makes me smile when our volunteers so whole-heartedly take care of the dogs without worrying about anything else. Prarthana also does Kennel Duty twice a week at RESQ!

So well – here’s hoping that Whitey and Blackie end up looking furry very soon – look out for pictures here, because the day they have their full coat – we’ll be proudly putting them up! :)

Beginner Level First Aid Course @ RESQ Office starts Today!

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Dr. Karlette is holding a Beginner Level First Aid Course starting today!

We generally don’t take in more than 10 people but this time, since she’s leaving, we’re trying to train up as many people as possible. So if you want to sign up – call us on 9373888500 and register quickly.

Its a 2-day course from 5:00-7:00pm today and tomorrow.

* Also a good time for previous volunteers to brush up on their skills. Dr. Karlette leaves end of this month so we need as many people on field as possible, so please ring us up and know if you will be available for rescues in July. Its monsoon time – so its going to be Gastro and Distemper cases unlimited :( if its anything like the last 3 years!

Rescues with Rupal…Nostalgia!

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

This morning I woke up with a rescue! Scrambled down to the ResQ Office in my pajamas where Rupali Sanghani had brought Jackie.

Jackie had been in a fight a couple of days ago. His wound was not so bad, just superficial bleeding, probably because he was rubbing himself against something because of the itching.

Balu and I did his dressing and packed him off. Calm and peaceful he was, wonder how he got into a fight in the first place.

Jackie - Dog Fight Wound

Rupal promised to come for rescues with me today..so finally managed to wake her up at noon and she agreed to come with me! We had a new volunteer called Dhanashree with us today, who took all the pictures you see here! We headed off to Koregaon Park, near ABC farms. Whitey had been treated by Nishaank and Prajakta last week for Skin Disease. The poor chap had absolutely no hair on his body. Rupal has her way with dogs and managed to get hold of him while we gave him his weekly shot. He ran for his life after that…and we didn’t manage to get a picture of him! We had a good laugh and hope he comes wagging his tail to us next week as well.

We headed to Kalyani Nagar to treat Buzzo. Buzzo was being treated by Dr. Karlette previously. His wound was healing and he happily cooperated with us while I stuffed some creams into his wound that was almost closed. Its funny how when you are treating one dog, the other dogs around that one dog get so curious and come to watch to show. Buzzo was a friendly guy and we didn’t need to muzzle or leash him during treatment. Its like he knew and probably ‘Oh get your job done already, give me a hug and go!’

Buzzo - Minor Wound on Hind Legs

Next stop was Eddie at near Ghorpadi Railway Station. We found our way to rescue caller Raghuveer’s  little home by the railway tracks. They were four people living in the house with 4 dogs and 6 cats! Eddie was being treated for Mange and was very patient while we sprayed her down with Ridd and put him in the sun to dry. Raghuveers family brought the dogs out one by one in line and we treated all their little wounds and scratches!

Eddie - Mange (Skin Disease)

Finally, our last stop was at Eatosphere @ Wanowrie. Blackie had a fracture, possibly a two-wheeler that may have run over his paw. We have no space at our Kennels and thats why are having to treat this dog on-site. Ruta, the owner of Eatosphere probably feeds all the dogs in the area because they all seemed to know her and her partner and they all looked very well-fed! Blackie was a tough one to catch, muzzle and hang on to! Finally, Rupal just picked him up in her arms and we did the entire treatment, bandaging and all in her arms!! Surprisingly, even after all that trauma he appeared like he went through while we treated him, he came back for a biscuit after we released him!

Blackie - Fractured Paw

Three hours of trotting around town, starved – Rupal and me grabbed a plate of Momos and headed back to the office!

A Few Words from Rupal:

“After ten whole months i finally get on the road with Neha to do a few follow ups and the experience was amazing! The excitement level was the same as it was on day one of me joining the Resq team :)  The first Resq for the day for me was at ABC farms, a complete mange case, I did not know if I would still have it in me to catch the dog , but when I approached the dog it all just happened, and I realised that I still had not lost touch with the work..though I might have forgotten a few of the meds ;)  But the best one of the day was treating a dog ( the wanowrie case )in mid air :)  It was a memorable day for me doing rescues with Neha, from whom I have learnt a lot! :) Cant wait for next thursday to join Neha again for rescues :)
